Eye of the Beholder

Congratulations to the Winners of our First Annual Travel Photo Contest

Travel may be on the downturn in the new economy, but as the results of our First Annual Travel Photo Contest show, the readers of Wild Blue Yonder magazine are still out and about—training their artistic eyes on a variety of flora and fauna, color and culture, skylines and street scenes from Boulder to Bangkok and beyond. And, though their subjects were dramatically different, our entrants shared one refreshing common trait: they all look at the world with curiosity and inspiration—and continue to cultivate an appetite for the unexpected.

Grand Prize Can Tho MarketMarlene Grueber

Though it was difficult to select a winner from our pool of nearly 100 photographs, Marlene Grueber’s Can Tho Market in Vietnam takes the prize. This beautifully composed picture has the traditional elements of color and light, texture and detail in spades—particularly the way the elements of the picture create a marvelous circular framing device, the contrast of the bright red chilies and fresh green onions, and the texture of the subject’s skin against her clothing. Grueber’s photograph transports the viewer to the market; when one of our judges said he could smell the onions, we knew we had a winner.
